South Lamar Boulevard corridor project
Status: Soliciting Bids
Project Overview
The South Lamar Boulevard Corridor Project will bring mobility, safety and connectivity improvements to South Lamar Boulevard, within the broader corridor from Riverside Drive to Ben White Boulevard. Funded by the 2016 Austin Mobility Bond, the project’s construction limits extend from Barton Springs Road to U.S. 290 (Ben White Boulevard).
Planned work includes accessible shared-use paths, sidewalks, bike lanes and ramps; updated curbs and driveways; roadway resurfacing; traffic signal and bus stop improvements; and upgrades to storm drains and water and wastewater lines. Streetscape enhancements will include landscaping, tree plantings, rain gardens, irrigation, signs and pavement markings, along with intermittent medians.
South Lamar Corridor Improvements (Full Corridor)
Status: Pre-Construction
The overall South Lamar Corridor project is approaching final design. To help deliver improvements more efficiently, the City is dividing the corridor into two segments at Montclaire Street:
- Southern Segment (Montclaire Street to US-290):
Bid solicitations began in July 2026; construction is anticipated to start in early 2027.
- Northern Segment (Barton Springs Road to Montclaire Street):
Expected to be sent to bid later, closer to 2029, as the southern segment nears completion.
Mary Street Roundabout
Status: Complete
Work on the Mary Street roundabout was completed in spring 2026. See photos of the completed roundabout.
The new roundabout:
- Improves safety and traffic flow at the intersection
- Adds pedestrian crossings at each leg of the roundabout
- Includes shared-use paths for people walking and biking
Stormwater Improvements
Status: Under Construction
Construction is underway on the storm drain project, which will improve drainage and support long-term roadway conditions along the corridor. This work is expected to continue through the next several years, with completion anticipated in 2027.
Del Curto / Bluebonnet Roundabout
Status: Pre-Construction
The City has selected a contractor for the Del Curto/Bluebonnet roundabout (the same contractor currently working on the storm drain project). Construction is expected to begin in Fall 2026.
Treadwell Connection Update
Status: Removed from Project Scope
As part of preliminary engineering, the City requested approval from Union Pacific Railroad to connect Treadwell Street to South Lamar via either an overpass or underpass. Union Pacific denied both requests, so this connection has been removed from the current project scope.
While it is not included in the corridor program due to feasibility and funding constraints, it could be considered in the future if prioritized through local mobility programs.
