Austin Energy completed a financial review that looked at Fiscal Year 2021 data on the costs of providing electric service. That review found that Austin Energy needs to increase base revenue by $48 million through an overall base rate increase of 7.6 percent. If approved, this increase will help Austin Energy better recover its costs while continuing to provide value to the community.
To better recover costs and find financial stability, Austin Energy is proposing to:
Update an outdated residential base rate structure, which does not accurately recover the costs to serve customers.
Better recover fixed costs by relying less on energy sales.
Adjust for higher operation and maintenance costs.
Bring customers closer to what it costs to serve them, establishing more equitable charges as the community continues to grow.
Provide feedback on proposed base rate changes by clicking on the link under Share Your Feedback. You can also find paper feedback forms at your local library and Utility Customer Service Centers.

Austin Energy Base Rate Review Video
On April 18, 2022 Austin Energy will propose base rate changes and launch a public, open and transparent base rate review process. Austin Energy policy requires the utility to regularly review its costs and revenues so that the utility and City Council can make sure customer charges accurately recover costs and reflect the community’s priorities. Base rates cover the costs of owning and operating the electric system.
Austin Energy hosted community meetings to discuss the base rate review in online and in-person settings ahead of the May 18 deadline for customers to formally participate. You can still find the presentation from these meetings and fill out a feedback form on Speak Up Austin by July 1, 2022.
