Sixth Street Mobility and Revitalization Project
Sixth Street Mobility and Revitalization Project
Thank you for visiting the virtual survey and open house, sharing three design alternatives for mobility and safety improvements to help shape the long-term vision for Sixth Street between Congress Avenue and I-35.
Welcome
Austin’s Historic Sixth Street is one of Austin's most recognizable streets. The nine-block area west of I-35 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of our city’s pre-eminent entertainment districts, home to a number of bars, clubs, and venues that contribute to Austin's robust music and entertainment scene. The City of Austin is developing a long-term streetscape plan for Sixth Street to keep this street healthy, vibrant and safe for all users.
The City has initiated a preliminary engineering study to define these infrastructure changes for Sixth Street. Preliminary engineering is a process to understand right-of-way constraints, underground utilities, and define future elements of the street such as sidewalks, bikeways, trees, parking, café zones or other uses.
Building on the recommendations presented in the Austin Core Transportation Plan and in collaboration with Great Streets, the City has identified three design alternatives and is now seeking community input. Each alternative treats bike/scooter lanes, pedestrian space and curb access differently, but all keep Sixth Street one-way westbound for vehicles. Each alternative shares the goal of expanding pedestrian space, providing curb access, and accommodating vehicle traffic.
The preliminary engineering study is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The City plans to begin design in 2026, with construction anticipated to start as early as 2027.
