Thank you for visiting the virtual open house to review proposed changes for Huntland Drive and Highland Mall Boulevard in the Highland Neighborhood. This project aims to improve safety, connectivity and comfort for everyone traveling in the area, whether walking, biking, taking transit or driving.
Huntland Drive and Highland Mall Boulevard connect residents to nearby parks, schools, churches, restaurants and retail along the Airport Boulevard corridor.
Between Airport Boulevard and Middle Fiskville Road, the proposed design would reconfigure the street from two travel lanes in each direction to one. This creates space for safer walking and biking facilities while maintaining similar vehicle travel times.
Huntland Drive is scheduled for resurfacing later this year, which provides an opportunity to make these changes at the same time. Highland Mall Boulevard is not currently scheduled for resurfacing, but future improvements are being considered as funding allows.
Please review the proposed changes below and share your feedback through the project survey, open March 30–April 17.

Huntland Drive (Airport Boulevard to Middle Fiskville Road)
Why changes are proposed
Huntland Drive is scheduled for resurfacing later this year. When streets are resurfaced, the City reviews opportunities to improve safety and travel options simultaneously.
Staff reviewed crash history, speeds and traffic volumes to develop a proposed design that improves safety and access while maintaining similar vehicle travel capacity. Between 2021 and 2025, there were 17 crashes on Huntland Drive, including three injury crashes.
Streets with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane often move traffic just as efficiently while reducing crashes and improving safety.

What will change on Huntland Drive
The proposed design would make several changes along the corridor to improve safety and travel options for everyone.
- Reconfigure travel lanes – To improve safety for everyone using the street, the roadway would be reconfigured from two travel lanes in each direction to one. This helps reduce speeding and unsafe passing while creating space for safer walking and biking facilities. Traffic capacity and travel times are expected to remain similar.
- Add a center turn lane – A two-way center turn lane would be added between Jonathan Drive and Roland Johnson Drive to help drivers access homes and businesses while keeping through traffic moving.
- Install protected bike lanes – Protected bike lanes would be added along the corridor using posts or other barriers to separate people biking from motor vehicle traffic and improve comfort and safety.
- Prepare for future pedestrian crossings – The design allows space for crossing islands in the center of the street. These islands shorten crossing distances and improve visibility for people walking and could be installed as funding becomes available. The existing crossing near St. Francis School would benefit from shorter crossing distances and slower vehicle speeds.
- Improve bike connections – The project would strengthen connections to existing bicycle lanes on Middle Fiskville Road and nearby shared-use paths. Some intersection turn lanes may be adjusted to reduce conflicts between people driving, walking and biking.
Intersection changes: Huntland Drive and Airport Boulevard
Changes are proposed at this intersection to reduce turning crashes and improve safety.
Over the past five years, six turning crashes, including one injury crash, have occurred at this location. To reduce these conflicts, westbound left turns from Huntland Drive onto Airport Boulevard would be restricted.
Drivers traveling westbound on Huntland Drive who want to head south on Airport Boulevard would instead use Jonathan Drive to reach the traffic signal at Highland Mall Boulevard.
Westbound right turns from Huntland Drive onto Airport Boulevard and southbound left turns from Airport Boulevard would still be allowed.
These improvements would be installed using materials such as pavement markings and vertical posts. A traffic signal could be considered in the future if needed.

Highland Mall Boulevard (Airport Boulevard to Middle Fiskville Road)
Highland Mall Boulevard is not currently scheduled for resurfacing. The City is seeking feedback on potential future improvements if funding becomes available.
Proposed improvements may include:
- Reconfiguring travel lanes from two lanes in each direction to one
- Creating space for safer pedestrian crossings
- Extending protected bike lanes to the Airport Boulevard intersection
- Adding protected bike lanes along the corridor
- Improving connections to Middle Fiskville Road bicycle facilities

Highland Mall Blvd Existing Conditions
Highland Mall Blvd Proposed Changes
Huntland Drive is scheduled for routine resurfacing and restriping between Airport Boulevard and Middle Fiskville Road in the summer of 2026. Physical protection for the bike lanes will be installed after the new striping is in place.
Other elements of the project — such as closing sidewalk gaps, adding pedestrian crossing islands and upgrading bus stops — may be added as funding becomes available.
Improvements to Highland Mall Boulevard may also be pursued in the future.
Feedback from people who use these streets is critical to developing a project that reflects the community's needs.
Please share your thoughts through the project survey, open through April 17, 2026.
