2026 Proposed Charter Amendments

 

The Austin City Council will consider including proposed Charter Amendments on the November 2026 election ballot. Most of the Charter Amendments were initially discussed and proposed by the 2024 Charter Review Commission after a public input process. 

Austinites are invited to give input during three upcoming public meetings. Speakers must register and will have the opportunity to give input in-person at City Hall or remotely. Registration instructions for each meeting are included below:  

  • July 28, 2026 at 10 a.m., Austin City Hall Council Chambers (301 W 2nd St.)  

City Council will take public comment on proposed charter amendments for the November 2026 ballot. No City Council action on the proposed charter amendments will occur during this meeting. Registered speakers will be able to testify on each individual amendment. Speakers will have two minutes per amendment. Standard rules for donating time will apply.  

  • Remote or in-person speakers can register to participate starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24 until noon on Monday, July 27. The link for registration will be published on https://www.austintexas.gov/council/meetings on Friday, July 24 by 5 p.m.  

  • Starting at noon on Monday, July 27, in-person speakers may register in person at Austin City Hall until 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28. 

 

  • July 30, 2026 at 10 a.m., Austin City Hall Council Chambers (301 W 2nd St.)  

City Council will take public comment, discuss, and consider placing recommended charter amendments on the November 2026 ballot.  
Registered speakers will be able to testify on each individual amendment. Speakers will have two minutes per amendment. Standard rules for donating time will apply. The charter amendments voted on during this July 30 meeting will be incorporated into a draft ordinance to call a special election for charter amendments. The draft ordinance will then be considered during the August 6 meeting. 

  • Remote or in-person speakers can register to participate starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 27 until noon on Wednesday, July 29. The link for registration will be published on https://www.austintexas.gov/council/meetings by 10 a.m. on Monday, July 27. 

  • Starting noon on Wednesday, July 29, in-person speakers may register in person at Austin City Hall until 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 30. 

  • NOTE – The meeting begins at 10 a.m. The public hearing on the budget is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. You are welcome to speak on any item on the agenda and must register to speak no later than Thursday, July 30 at 9:15 a.m. in person at City Hall.  

 

  • August 6, 2026 at 10 a.m., Austin City Hall Council Chambers (301 W 2nd St.) 

City Council will take public comment, discuss, and consider action on calling a special charter election for November 2026.  
The Austin City Council will consider adopting the draft ordinance developed in response to the approved charter amendments discussed and voted on during the July 30 meeting. Registered speakers will have two minutes to testify on the agenda item ordering the special charter election. Standard rules for donation of time will apply. 

  • Remote or in-person speakers can register to participate starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 3 until noon on Wednesday, August 5. The link for registration will be published on https://www.austintexas.gov/council/meetings on Monday, August 3 by 10 a.m.    

  • Starting noon on Wednesday, August 5, in-person speakers may also register in person at Austin City Hall until 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 6.
