Paces Mill Flood Risk Reduction Project
Paces Mill Flood Risk Reduction Project
The Paces Mill Creek Flood Risk Reduction Project aims to reduce the frequency and magnitude of flooding for homes along Paces Mill Lane. Homes in the neighborhood have flooded on two occasions in the past decade (October 2015 and May 2016).
The Paces Mill drainage channel currently overflows when it rains more than 6.8 inches in a 24-hour period and 15 homes along Paces Mill Lane are within the City of Austin 100-Year Floodplain.
Project summary and background:
We recently completed a preliminary engineering report (PER) which investigated 13 alternatives to reduce the impacts of flooding for the neighborhood. The alternatives were investigated for effectiveness in reducing flood risk, impacts to the environment, and the short term and long-term impacts to the neighborhood. Of the alternatives investigated, both structural channel improvements and a voluntary buyout program were identified as viable alternatives to improve flood safety in the neighborhood. You can find more information about this project by viewing the factsheets in the "document" section on this webpage or visit www.austintexas.gov/pacesmill .
Project Update:
After considering the feedback from community members and consulting internally with Watershed Protection Department leadership, we have decided to move forward with pursuing the structural channel improvement alternative.
